Description

Infravision is a sensory enhancement spell that allows the caster to see in complete darkness by detecting heat differences in their surroundings. Living creatures, warm objects, and recently disturbed areas appear clearly, while colder surfaces and inanimate objects are visible in muted tones.

The spell grants a base range of darkvision that extends an additional 5 feet per caster level, allowing more experienced spellcasters to perceive far deeper into unlit environments.

Infravision does not create light and cannot reveal color or fine detail as normal sight would. Illusions, magical darkness, or extreme environmental conditions may still obscure vision depending on their nature. Despite these limitations, the spell is invaluable for dungeon exploration, night travel, and combat in low-light or lightless conditions.

Area of Effect

Infravision is designed as a self-targeted spell. Attempting to cast it on another creature significantly increases the complexity of the magic.

Targeting someone other than the caster adds a +20 difficulty to the spell. This increased difficulty reflects the challenge of synchronizing the spell with another being’s sensory perception and neural pathways.

Failure when attempting to target another creature may result in the spell simply failing, reduced range, or temporary visual disorientation for the target, depending on the casting rules in use. As a result, most spellcasters reserve this modification for situations where the benefit clearly outweighs the risk.
