Description

The Black Guard is an elite royal order founded by decree of the King in response to a growing tide of targeted attacks against the Crown and the realm. Created not merely as soldiers, but as a symbol of resolve, the Black Guard stands as a living oath to hunt down corruption, extinguish evil, and defend the innocent wherever darkness gathers.

Founding

The order was formed during a period of escalating threats to the royal family and the stability of the kingdom. Recognising that traditional forces were not sufficient to confront emerging dangers, the King established a specialised unit with a singular mandate: proactive eradication of hostile forces within the realm.

Prince Salistar and Lady Malderia were appointed as its first joint commanders, each granted equal authority. Their leadership defined the tone and ethos of the order from its inception: disciplined, uncompromising, and bound by honour.

Upon its formation, sixty warriors were assigned to the Guard:

  • Twenty heavy knights clad in full black plate
  • Twenty light cavalry equipped for rapid engagement
  • Twenty mounted archers trained in mobile warfare

This balanced structure ensured that the Black Guard could respond swiftly, strike decisively, and sustain prolonged campaigns when necessary.

Armour and Symbolism

The defining feature of the Black Guard is its armour.

Commissioned by the kingdom’s master blacksmiths and leather-smiths, the armour is pitch black, detailed with silver patterns unique to the order. The designs are identical across ranks, symbolising unity of purpose and equality in oath. While rank may determine responsibility, all members stand as brothers and sisters within the Guard.

Heavy knights wear polished black full plate, imposing and formidable. Light cavalry and mounted archers wear flexible black leather reinforced for both mobility and protection. The aesthetic is intentionally intimidating, projecting authority and resolve on the battlefield.

The black steel has become synonymous with judgment. Where the Black Guard marches, law follows.

Oath

Every member of the Black Guard kneels before their commanders and swears:

  • To pledge their life to the Black Guard
  • To protect the innocent
  • To uphold the laws of the land
  • To hunt and extinguish evil wherever it takes root

In return, the commanders vow to protect their soldiers as fiercely as they defend the realm. This mutual bond forms the foundation of the Guard’s strength.

Purpose and Role

The Black Guard operates as a specialised force separate from conventional armies. Their primary responsibilities include:

  • Investigating and eliminating organised threats
  • Hunting supernatural or unnatural evils
  • Acting as royal enforcers in matters of grave importance
  • Protecting key figures of the Crown

They are not merely soldiers. They are hunters.

When common forces falter or when darkness spreads beyond the reach of ordinary law, the Black Guard is deployed.

Reputation

Since its formation, the Black Guard has become both feared and revered. To the innocent, they are protectors. To criminals and dark creatures, they are a warning.

Their name carries weight across the realm. It is said that when black steel is seen on the horizon, evil begins to flee.

The Black Guard is not simply an order of warriors. It is a declaration that the kingdom will not bow to darkness.
